In class, you will pair off to test each other’s websites. One student will be the test facilitator, and one will be the tester. Then, you will switch roles.
Before starting:
- Both people should write down three tasks your primary user would need to accomplish on your website. These are the tasks you will ask the tester to perform.
Test Facilitator:
- Feel free to record the Zoom breakout session to your computer before starting.
- Send the url to your team’s website to the tester through Zoom chat.
- Ask the tester to open the link and share their screen. (Record the Zoom if you both want to.)
- Tell the tester to think aloud—to say their thoughts out loud as they work through the tasks you give them. (It can feel awkward, but please do.)
- Ask the tester to do the first task you wrote down. Also paste the task into the chat so the tester can refer to it if they want a reminder of the task.
- ALTERNATIVE: You can have the tester start with a blank browser window and ask them to do the task. They may say they would first search in Google for the answer or something, and you can give them the URL to your site later, if they say they would click on it if they found it.
- Watch the screen and listen to the tester as they try to accomplish the task. Take notes on any places where they have trouble or where they are delighted with the process (or where the process is very easy and smooth). Write down any suggestions they give as they think out loud.
- If the tester stops talking out loud, remind them to think out loud please.
- Avoid asking the tester any questions or telling them if they are on the right track or not. Be as quiet as you can. If they ask you a question, tell them that they cannot fail the task. If they can’t find where to go, it is a problem with the website, not them. If they can’t find it, you can end the task. Not being able to accomplish the task is an important finding. (You can show them where the item is after the test has ended and then get their feedback then.)
- Once the task has been accomplished or the tester says they are done, move on to the second task and repeat the process. If you have time, you can go to the third task, but make sure you have enough time for your partner to test. (Each facilitator has 10 minutes total. Switch at 10 minutes.)
- Once you are done with the tasks, you can then show your partner things you have questions about and get their feedback.
- Switch roles at 10 minutes and repeat the process.
- Stop recording at the end of the session.
Test Participant:
- Feel free to ask any clarifying questions if you are not sure what the facilitator is asking you to do.
