Overview

Unit 2 will have two parts: 1) the creation and completion of a class-wide survey and 2) the creation of an infographic explaining some important or interesting conclusions you’ve drawn from the data (along with a short executive summary).

Possible Group Work

In our second unit, you may choose to work individually or as a pair or team. Perhaps you saw someone’s presentation and want to do work related to that topic, or perhaps you already worked with someone on the teaching presentation and want to keep working together. Let me know if you plan to work as a team as soon as you have decided. I need to know to adjust the submission availability in Blackboard.

If you work as a team on this project, I will require you to complete the following team contract if you have not already completed one.

Objectives

• Practice designing a data collection tool (a survey in this case)
• Gain basic data analysis skills
• Learn a new tool for data visualization (Tableau)
• Possibly continue practicing with the tool you used for unit 1
• Learn techniques for communicating complex data to others
• Practice understanding and choosing useful or interesting segments of data from a larger data set
• Practice making meaningful and readily understandable data visualizations
• Practice synthesizing data and information into a concise format using visuals and text
• Improve design skills and again practice using design principles
• Learn more about the ideas our class has about many different ideas

Class Survey

The class survey will be the source data for the final unit 2 infographic. Together in class, we will construct a massive survey filled with questions about whichever topics we decide and/or vote on. I will have you brainstorm ideas for questions outside of class and in small groups. My other professional communication class will also contribute to this survey, so we will have about 50 students coming up with questions and responding to the survey.
